Book review: Hold me still, by Britaini Armitage

The story follows the romantic suspense between Ella, a young billionaire business-woman, and Elliot, her security expert (ex-military). Their relationship evolves from a professional interaction to passion right in the first chapters, they are immediately attracted to one another and the chemistry is played out in a slow and pure burn. The plot is intriguing and fast paced, I got hooked on from the moment the suspense surfaced, with numerous life-threatening occurrences, as our sweet and hardworking Ella is pursed by an unknown threat. The tension builds-up chapter by chapter, and continuously this hidden threat pursues and attacks Ella. I find it very romantic how Elliot, her security, attempts to protect her nonstop with every new danger that appears.

“Everything is going to be ok, Ella.” a smooth male voice crooned her. “Try not to move too much. Can you open your eyes sweetheart?”

The story has a very religious backbone to the plot, which wasn’t something that really appealed to me. Ella is faithful and a God devoted person, very beloved and who deserves to find happiness, as she was brought up by a difficult past, with no family and just a few friends. Both Ella and Elliot are longing for something to fill up the pain from their past and finding each other just might be the way. Ella’s pursuer becomes more aggressive and dramatic events take place, that make us wonder if Elliot is indeed capable of protecting the woman he is falling for, and what will be the ultimate price?

Book review: Pawn, by Angela Ford

I was completely drawn by this STUNNING cover, I knew I had to read it right away. I am glad that my cover instincts were matched by a glorious action-packed story!

Pawn follows the story of Maeve, an unmatched warrior with amazing skills. After-all, she is the last descendant of Carn, a powerful species that has been wiped out. After being captured by the Dark Fae due to her twisted dark soul, Maeve struggles with guilt, ashamed of her past of selling her strength as a mercenary for all types of wrong and deadly deeds. She is then forced into the dark fae’s command, which she must obey in order to regain her full strength and freedom.

“Your power is mine, and until I see fit, you will wear the collar. If you think you can blindside me, betray me, and escape, think again.”

This is definitely a DARK fantasy, which is EXACTLY what I have been looking for. It portrays very well suffering and anguish throughout Maeve’s redemption arc. The world building is excellent, with all types of wicked and magical creatures that we crave for (dragons, faes, goblins, orcs…). It also has some romance and chemistry, however slow-burn, which I hope is picked up in book two (you all know how I am a sucker for chemistry). I only hope to see Maeve’s strength returned to see the world tremble at her feet. I can’t wait to pick up book 2 and be immersed in battle galore!

Book review: Falling for the Voice, by Mag Maury

Falling for the voice is an uplifting, easy and fast romance perfect for the summer. The romantic contemporary cover does not give away how steamy and sexy this story really is! It centers around the fresh romance between Charlie and Matt, both carrying a lot of painful luggage from their past and who find comfort in each others arms.

The book had me giggling and smiling while reading! The story is told in first person by Charlie, who is hilarious! I love how the author includes some funny mental notes that Charlies makes for herself:

“One: Don’t ogle Matt as I wake up. Two: Did he kiss me? Three: Dig a hole and bury myself in it forever. Four: Did he kiss me? Five: I said, don’t ogle Matt!”

The romance starts off focused on lust and their sexual attraction towards one another, the author writes masterfully the chemistry between the characters, I found myself blushing with the intensity of the sexiness. Matt comes out a bit like an authoritative brute, I think he “picked up” Charlie against her will and carried her about 10 times in the story! Don’t get me wrong, I love manly brutes! 😛 Their romance seems too perfect and easy at first, however the plot throws some plot twists that we were not expecting which make the story-line intriguing. The side characters are all very loyal and funny, I adored Charlies friendship with her room-mate and the guys at the bar.

Book review: The Queen of Cursed Things, by S. M. Gaither

I really enjoyed this first book in the Serpents & kings series. It follows the story of Alaya, part of the serpent clan who was thought to be completely extinguished by the High King. Able to control the curses left behind by her powerful clan, Alaya is now the most wanted and most feared person in the kingdom. The idea behind the plot and the world building is incredible, S. M. Gaither was able to create this world full of unique clans who each have a specific affinity to a certain element or skill. I really enjoyed learning about all the clans, the powers they carry, which is complemented nicely by art at the start of the book indicating the different clans. The story reads slow-paced at first and then it develops fluently with a descriptive plot.

The cover is what drew me in!

“What if the Serpent-kind had left curses upon this wretched palace… What if she really did have the power to wake them up?”

The moment the Prince was introduced I was very intrigued by his sassy and confident personality, and he became automatically my favorite character. The plot revolves around Alaya, which must with the help of her companions follow with the quest at hand, to understand her past and save the Sundolian Empire. The Queen of Cursed Things is perfect for lovers of high fantasy, hero characters with mysterious nature and heritage, betrayals and plot twists, as well as dragons!
